The developing placenta starts producing glycoprotein hormone called Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) as soon as the egg has been fertilized. The presence of this hCG in urine and serum makes it an excellent marker for the early detection of pregnancy. In normal pregnancy, hCG can be detected as early as within the first week of conception, and its concentration frequently increases to 100 mIU/ mL or more by the first missed menstrual period. The hCG level continues to rise rapidly and peaks around 10-12 weeks into pregnancy.
